Welcome to Upper Cleveland Rescue Squad

Upper Cleveland Rescue was founded in the late 1950’s. In 1960 a charter was given granted by Cleveland County allowing Upper Cleveland to function as a Rescue Squad.

The first vehicle Upper Cleveland started out with was an old Cadillac that was donated by Ollie Harris. Dale Costner and Dwight Williams also donated several vehicles in the early years. The rescue has come donated vehicles in the 60’s  to being able to  purchase new ambulances and rescue trucks in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s with the help of donations from the communities we serve. In the late 90’s the rescue squad had a total of 5 ambulances, a rescue truck and 3 boats.

Herman Grigg Tabernacle was the original location of the rescue squad. From there we moved to what is now Town Hall for the City of Lawndale. Our current and permanent location is 1032 W. Stagecoach Trail.

Upper Cleveland Rescue started out with 14 members. Warren Hoyle was the Chief at that time. Each Member borrowed money from the bank to be able to buy their radios, uniforms, jackets, and other equipment that was needed. The first members hand delivered letters asking for money to help build the rescue building. These dedicated men would also stand out in all type of weather at all stop signs with there buckets asking for donations. This was true dedication and for it they were able to build there rescue building. This building is now used as Town Hall and has the Lawndale Volunteer Fire Department located behind it. In the early 90’s we were able to raise enough money to have our present building built which consist of 3 double bays, kitchen, 2 offices, 2 crew bedrooms, day room and meeting/training space.

Upper Cleveland Rescue has gone from 14 members in 1960 who at the time did not have to have any certifications, but later were the first rescue members in the state of North Carolina to be certified as Emergency Medical Technicians, to 1996 with approximately 80 members. It is easy to see through this history how much hard work and dedication has gone into forming and continuation of Upper Cleveland Rescue Squad.

In 1994 Upper Cleveland Rescue Squad made history in Cleveland County, NC by electing a woman as Chief of a Rescue Department.
